Grade Levels

GS-1 to GS-15 is the grade-level category used in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and qualifications necessary for the position. The General Schedule is broken down into 15 distinct grade level classifications. When it comes to work, the grade level assigned corresponds to the salary at the start, with higher grade levels representing greater income.

Typically, entry-level positions for which a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree may be necessary is classified as GS-1 through GS-7 grade levels. Grade level designations for positions that require a Master’s degree, more years of experience above entry-level, or management as well as supervisory work are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions like psychologists and doctors and those requiring high-level specialists as well as being classified as G2-13 to grades GS-15.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of a position within the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the region. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan regions get a special locality salary, which is more than the usual adjustments received by the rest part of the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, in this case it was 14.16 percent in 2011. Yet, an employee in Atlanta gets a locality payment that is 19.29 percent, and those who work in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the locality pay percentage by the GS basis rate then add that number by the rate of base to determine your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten levels in each of the General Schedule classes, each of which offers an averagely higher salary than the step before it. In the case of federal employees, most agencies and departments offer beginning salary at the Step One within your grade. Additionally you might be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experiences warrant a higher amount.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study each team member is qualified for a raise equivalent to the next grade, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. The evaluation of performance occurs every calendar year, for steps One through Four, except Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 to 7, the evaluations take place every two years. And in the case of Steps 8 to 10, they are conducted each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available in particular federal government employment, such as administrative and professional roles that permit individuals to climb the ranks to higher levels to be considered for the position you are applying for. If this type of ladder opportunity is available in the position you’re applying for, it will be stated in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Certain professions have ladders which rise at grade-level intervals (for instance, GS-5 to 7 and then 9) this means that if promoted, you’ll be two grades higher. Your annual performance assessment will determine if you qualify for this promotion. Pay increase of at minimum some thousand dollars are frequently linked to promotions to higher GS grades within the Federal Government.
