Generally, entry-level positions for that a high school diploma or bachelor’s or master’s degree are required are classified as GS-1 to GS-7 grade levels. Grade-level designations for positions that require a master’s degree additional years of experience beyond entry-level, or management or supervision experience, are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions such as doctors and psychologists and for those that require specialists of high-level as well as being classified as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of an employee on the General Schedule scale to account for living costs in the region. As of the date when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan areas are eligible for a particular locality pay, which is higher than the typical adjustments that are offered to the rest parts of United States.

The normal adjustment rate, in this case is 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta receives a locality wage that is 19.29 percent, while those who work in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay multiplied by your GS base rate, and then add the number to the base rate to get your annual salary.

GS Steps

There are ten separate steps in the general Schedule classes Each stage offers an essentially higher wage than the one preceding it. For example, most federal departments and agencies offer starting salary at the Step One at your grade. Additionally you may be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experience warrants a greater income level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study is completed, the team member becomes eligible for a raise equivalent to the next highest amount, at the choice of the supervisor or manager. Performance evaluations are conducted each annually for the steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are performed every two years. And in the case of Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A career ladder is available in certain federal government positions including administrative and professional positions that allow individuals to climb the ranks to the higher grades for your position. In general, if this kind of career ladder is offered in the position you’re applying for, it will be stated in the federal job vacancy notice.

Some jobs have ladders that ascend at intervals of grade levels (for example, from GS-5 to 7 before moving to 9) That means that if you get promoted, you’ll be up two levels. The annual performance review will determine whether or not you qualify for the promotion. Pay increments of at least some thousand dollars are frequently connected with the move up to one or more GS grade levels in the federal government.
