Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level classification used within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and qualifications necessary for the position. The General Schedule is split into 15 separate grade level classifications. When it comes to a job, the grade level assigned indicates the starting compensation, with higher grades indicating the highest amount of income.

Typically, entry-level positions for which a high school diploma or bachelor’s or master’s degree are required will be listed as being GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade-level designations for positions that require a Master’s degree, more years of experience above the entry-level levels, or managerial or supervisory experience are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Advanced and professional degrees are required for positions such as psychologists and doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level and are classified as G2-13 and the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay for a job that is on the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the area. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan areas are eligible for a special locality salary, which is greater than the standard adjustment received by the rest part of the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, for example of 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta is paid a locality rate which is 19.29 percent, and those who work in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay with the GS Base Rate, and then add that number in addition to your base salary to determine your annual salary.

GS Steps

There are ten steps in the general Schedule classes, each of which offers an averagely higher salary than the one preceding it. For instance, many federal departments and agencies offer starting pay at Step One within your grade. However you may be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experiences warrant a higher level.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly following each performance review. After each study, the team member becomes eligible for an increase in pay equivalent to the next level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. Performance evaluations are conducted every year for Steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 through 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. However, when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available in certain federal government positions for administrative and professional positions that allow you to advance through the ranks to higher levels to be considered for the position you are applying for. If this kind of career ladder opportunity is available for the position you are applying for, it will be stated in the federal job vacancy notice.

Certain occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for example, GS-5 to 7 and then 9) This means that if promoted, you’ll be up two levels. Your annual performance assessment will determine if you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increments of at least some thousand dollars are frequently associated with moving up one or more GS grades within Federal government.
