Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level classification utilized in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required to be a candidate for a particular job. It is broken down into 15 distinct grade level classifications. When it comes to a job the grade level that is assigned corresponds to the salary at the start, with higher grades indicating higher amounts of income.

Generally, entry-level positions for those who have a high-school diploma or a bachelor’s degree may be necessary will be listed as being GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade levels for positions which require a master’s or additional years of work experience over entry-level or management or supervisory experience are assigned to classes GS-8 and GS-12. Advanced and professional qualifications are required for positions such as doctors and psychologists and for those that require specialists of high-level, and they are classified as G2-13 through grades GS-15.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary for a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the area. As of the date of writing, around 35 metropolitan areas are eligible for a special locality salary, which is greater than the standard allowances received by the remainder parts of United States.

The typical adjustment rate, for instance, was around 14.16 percent in the year 2011. Yet, an employee in Atlanta is paid a locality rate that is 19.29 percent, and the residents of Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the percentage of locality pay with the GS Base Rate, and then add that number by the rate of base to calculate the total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten different steps in the General Schedule classes, each of which offers an averagely higher salary over the previous step. For instance, many federal departments and agencies provide beginning salary at the Step One within your grade. In addition, you may be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you think your prior experience warrants a greater income amount.

The performance reviews are carried out regularly and, after each evaluation, the team member becomes eligible for an increase in pay equivalent to the next highest level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Performance evaluations are conducted each annually for the steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 through 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years, and with regard to Steps 8 to 10, they’re shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available in particular federal government employment for administrative and professional roles and allows individuals to climb the ranks to higher levels to be considered for the position you are applying for. If this type of career ladder job is available in the position you’re applying for, it will be stated in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that rise at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9) This means that if you get promoted, you’ll be to a higher grade. The annual performance review will determine if you qualify for the promotion. Pay increments of several thousand dollars are often linked to promotions upwards one or more GS grades within the Federal Government.
