Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the category of grade used to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required for a given job. It is broken down into 15 distinct grade level classifications. In the event of an occupation, the grade level assigned represents the beginning salary, with higher grades indicating the highest amount of income.

Typically, entry-level positions for those who have a high-school diploma or bachelor’s degree is required will be listed as being GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade level designations for positions that require a master’s degree additional years of work experience over entry-level, or management or supervision experience, are classified into the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions such as doctors and psychologists and those requiring high-level specialists, and they are classified as G2-13 to grades GS-15.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of a position in the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the region. At the time when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan areas are eligible for a specific locality-specific pay, which is greater than the standard adjustments received by the rest of the United States.

The normal adjustment rate, in this case is 14.16 percent in 2011. GS Steps

Performance evaluations are conducted each annually for the steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 through 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. However, when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available for federal government employees in specific positions like professional and administrative roles that allow one to move up the ranks to the higher grades for your position.
