Grade Levels

GS-1 to GS-15 is the category of grade utilized in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and skills required for a given position. It is split into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. For work, the grade level assigned represents the beginning salary, with higher grades indicating more significant income.

Typically, entry-level positions for where a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree is required can be classified under GS-1 through GS-7 grade levels. The grade level designations for jobs that require a Master’s degree, additional years of experience beyond the entry-level level, or management or supervision experience, are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for positions such as psychologists and doctors and for those that require specialists of high-level, and they are classified as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is included in the base pay of a job in the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the area. As of the date of this writing, about 35 metropolitan regions get a special locality salary, which is greater than the standard allowances received by the remainder part of the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, for example it was 14.16 percent in the year 2011. However, employees in Atlanta gets a locality payment in the amount of 19.29 percent, and those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the locality pay percentage multiplied by your GS base rate, then add that number to the base rate to calculate the total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten separate levels in each of the General Schedule classes and each one offers a somewhat better wage than the step before it. For instance, the majority of federal departments and agencies provide beginning pay starting at the Step One in your grade level. Additionally you may be capable of negotiating “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experience justifies a higher income amount.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly following each performance review. After each study is completed, the team member becomes eligible for an increase in pay equal to the next level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. Performance evaluations are conducted every calendar year, for steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. With regard to Steps 5 through 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. Likewise, in the case of Steps 8 to 10, they are conducted every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available for federal government employees in specific positions like administrative and professional jobs and allows you to rise through the ranks to higher grade levels in your job. In general, if this type of career ladder job is available in the position you’re applying for it will be mentioned in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Certain professions have ladders which are able to be climbed at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 to 7 before moving to 9) This means that if you get promoted, you will go two grades higher. The annual performance review will determine if you qualify for the promotion. Pay increases of at least several thousand dollars are typically linked to promotions upwards one or more GS grades in the federal government.
