Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level classification employed to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the degree of difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required to be a candidate for a particular job. The General Schedule can be divided into 15 distinct grade level classifications. For work the grade level that is assigned indicates the starting compensation, with higher grades indicating higher amounts of income.

Generally, entry-level positions for those who have a high-school diploma or a bachelor’s or master’s degree are required can be classified under GS-1 through GS-7 grade levels. The grade level designations for jobs that require a master’s degree further years of experience that go beyond entry-level, or management and supervisory experiences are assigned to the GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for positions such as psychologists and doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level and are classed as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of an employee within the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the region. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan regions get a specific locality pay that is greater than the normal allowances received by the remainder of the United States.

The normal adjustment rate, for instance is 14.16 percent in 2011. Yet, an employee in Atlanta is paid a locality rate that is 19.29 percent, while the residents of Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay by the GS base rate, then add that number to the base rate to calculate your annual salary.

GS Steps

There are ten stages in each of the general Schedule classes, each of which offers an averagely higher salary over the previous step. For example, most federal departments and agencies offer starting salary at the Step One within your grade. However you may be capable of negotiating “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experience warrants a greater income amount.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis, and after each study, the team member becomes eligible for an increase in pay equivalent to the next level, at the option of the manager or supervisor. Evaluations of performance are held every calendar year, for steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. With regard to Steps 5 to 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. Likewise, when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they are conducted each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A career ladder is available in federal government jobs for professional and administrative roles, which allows individuals to climb the ranks to higher levels in your job. In general, if this type of ladder is offered for the position you are applying for, it will be stated in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Certain professions have ladders which rise at grade-level intervals (for example, from GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9) That means that if promoted, you will go two grades higher. Your annual performance assessment will determine whether or not you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increase of at minimum several thousand dollars are typically connected with the move up to one or more GS grade levels in the federal government.
