Grade Levels

GS-1 to GS-15 is the classification of grade employed within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and qualifications necessary for a specific job. The General Schedule is broken down into 15 grade levels classifications. For an occupation the grade level is the initial compensation with higher grades indicating the highest amount of income.

The majority of entry-level positions those who have a high-school diploma or bachelor’s degree may be necessary will be listed as being GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. Grade levels for positions requiring a master’s degree, more years of experience above the entry-level level, or management or supervisory experience are classified into the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Advanced and professional degrees are required for certain positions like psychologists, doctors as well as those that require high-level specialists which are classed as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay of a job that is on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the region. As of the date at the time of writing, approximately 35 metropolitan regions get a specific locality-specific pay, which is higher than the typical adjustments that are offered to the rest in the United States.

The typical adjustment rate, in this case is 14.16 percent in the year 2011. However, employees in Atlanta is paid a locality rate that is 19.29 percent, while the residents of Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay multiplied by your GS base salary, then add that number to the base rate to determine your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten stages within each of the general Schedule classes Each stage offers a somewhat better wage than the one preceding it. For example, most federal departments and agencies offer starting pay at the Step One within your grade. At the same time, you may be in a position to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experiences justify a higher level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis and, after each evaluation an employee is eligible for an increase in pay equivalent to the next highest amount, at the choice of the supervisor or manager. Evaluations of performance are held each calendar year, for steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 through 7, the evaluations take place every two years. Likewise, for Steps 8 to 10, they are shown each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder to career is offered in certain federal government positions like administrative and professional jobs, which allows you to advance through the ranks to the higher grades in your job. Generally speaking, if this type of ladder option is available for the post you are applying for it will be listed in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Certain occupations have ladders that rise at grade-level intervals (for instance, GS-5 to 7 , and finally 9) That means that if promoted, you’ll move up two grade levels. Your annual performance assessment will determine if you qualify for the promotion. Pay increments of at least several thousand dollars are often linked to promotions to higher GS grades within the Federal Government.
