Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level category used for the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the degree of difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required to be a candidate for a particular position. The General Schedule can be broken down into 15 distinct grade level classifications. When it comes to work the grade level that is assigned corresponds to the salary at the start, with higher grade levels representing the highest amount of income.

The majority of entry-level positions where a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree may be necessary can be classified under GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade levels for positions which require a master’s or more years of experience above entry-level, or management and supervisory experiences are classified into GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Advanced and professional degrees are required for certain positions such as psychologists and doctors and those requiring high-level specialists, and they are classified as G2-13 to GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay of a position that is on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the area. At the time of writing, around 35 metropolitan areas receive a specific locality-specific pay, which is greater than the standard allowances received by the remainder part of the United States.

The normal adjustment rate, for instance is 14.16 percent in 2011. However, employees in Atlanta earns a locality pay which is 19.29 percent, while those working in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the locality pay percentage multiplied by your GS base rate, and then add that number in addition to your base salary to determine your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten distinct levels in each of the general Schedule classes that each offer a somewhat better wage than the step before it. For instance, many federal agencies and departments offer beginning wages at the beginning of Step One at your grade. In addition you may be capable of negotiating “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experiences justify a higher level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study is completed, the team member becomes eligible for a pay increase equivalent to the next level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. The evaluation of performance occurs each annually for the steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 through 7, evaluations are performed every two years, and in the case of Steps 8 through 10, they are conducted each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available for federal government employees in specific positions, such as administrative and professional jobs that permit you to advance through the ranks to higher grade levels for your position. If this type of ladder option is available for the position you are applying for, it will be stated in the federal job vacancy notice.

Some occupations have ladders that rise at grade-level intervals (for example, GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9) this means that if you are promoted, you’ll be two grades higher. Your annual performance evaluation will determine whether or not you qualify for the promotion. Pay increments of several thousand dollars are typically connected with the move to higher GS grades in The federal government.
