Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the grade-level classification that is used in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and requirements for a specific position. It is split into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. For an occupation the grade level represents the beginning salary, with higher grade levels representing the highest amount of income.

The majority of entry-level positions which a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree is required will be listed as being GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. The grade level designations for jobs that require a Master’s degree, additional years of work experience over the entry-level levels, or managerial or supervisory experience are assigned to the GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for jobs such as doctors and psychologists and those requiring high-level specialists which are classified as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay of a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the area. At the time when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan regions receive specific locality-specific pay, which is greater than the normal adjustments received by the rest in the United States.

The average adjustment rate, as an example of 14.16 percent in the year 2011. Yet, an employee in Atlanta receives a locality wage in the amount of 19.29 percent, while those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, or. Multiply the percentage of locality pay times the GS base salary, and then add the number on top of the base wage to determine your annual salary.

GS Steps

There are ten separate stages within each of the General Schedule classes that each offer an essentially higher wage over the previous step. For instance, many federal departments and agencies offer starting wages at the beginning of the Step One in your grade level. However you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experience justifies a higher income level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study each team member is eligible for an increase in pay equivalent to the next highest level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Evaluations of performance are held every annually for the steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. However, for Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available in certain federal government positions like professional and administrative roles and allows you to advance through the ranks to higher levels for your position. If this type of career ladder job is available for the position you are applying for it will be listed in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that rise at grade-level intervals (for example, GS-5 to 7 and then 9) This means that if you get promoted, you will go up two levels. Your annual performance assessment will determine whether or not you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increases of at least thousands of dollars are usually linked to promotions upwards one or more GS grade levels in the Federal Government.
