Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level classification employed to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required for the job. The General Schedule can be broken down into 15 grade levels classifications. For work the grade level that is assigned is the initial compensation with higher grade levels representing greater income.

Typically, entry-level positions for where a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree may be necessary will be listed as being GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. Grade level designations for positions requiring a master’s degree, further years of experience that go beyond the entry-level level, or management or supervision experience, are assigned to classes GS-8 and GS-12. Advanced and professional degrees are required for certain positions like psychologists, doctors and for those that require specialists of high-level which are classified as G2-13 and GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of an employee that is on the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the area. At the time at the time of writing, approximately 35 metropolitan regions get a particular locality pay, which is more than the usual adjustment received by the rest parts of United States.

The standard adjustment rate, in this case it was 14.16 percent in the year 2011. But, workers in Atlanta earns a locality pay that is 19.29 percent, while those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the locality pay percentage by the GS base rate, then add that number on top of the base wage to get your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten separate stages within each of the General Schedule classes Each stage offers a somewhat better wage that the preceding step. For instance, the majority of federal agencies and departments give beginning pay starting at the Step One in your grade. Additionally you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you think your prior experience justifies a higher income level.

Regularly, performance reviews are conducted following each performance review. After each study each team member is eligible for a raise equal to the next level, at the option of the manager or supervisor. Evaluations of performance are held each one year in Steps One through Four, except Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 through 7, evaluations are performed every two years. Likewise, in the case of Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A career ladder is available for federal government employees in specific positions including administrative and professional jobs that permit individuals to climb the levels to be promoted to higher grade levels in your job. In general, if this kind of career ladder opportunity is available for the post you are applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Certain professions have ladders which climb at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 to 7 , and finally 9) This means that if promoted, you’ll move up two grade levels. Your annual performance evaluation will determine if you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increments of at least thousands of dollars are usually linked to promotions up one or more GS grades in Federal government.
