Grade Levels

GS-1 through GS-15 is the grade-level classification that is used within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required for a given job. The General Schedule is split into 15 grade levels classifications. When it comes to an occupation the grade level is the initial compensation with higher grade levels representing the highest amount of income.

Typically, entry-level positions for which a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree is required can be classified under GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. Grade level designations for positions which require a master’s or more years of experience above entry-level or management or supervision experience, are assigned to GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Advanced and professional degrees are required for jobs like psychologists, doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level which are classified as G2-13 to the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay of a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the area. As of the date at the time of writing, approximately 35 metropolitan regions receive specific locality-specific pay, which is more than the usual allowances received by the remainder parts of United States.

The typical adjustment rate, in this case it was 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta gets a locality payment that is 19.29 percent, while those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the locality pay percentage with the GS Base Rate, then add that number in addition to your base salary to arrive at your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten different stages within each of the general Schedule classes that each offer an averagely higher salary that the preceding step. In the case of federal employees, most departments and agencies provide beginning pay starting at Step One in your grade. At the same time you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you think your prior experience warrants a greater income level.

The performance reviews are carried out regularly, and after each study each team member is eligible for an increase in pay equal to the next level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. Evaluations of performance are held every year for Steps One through Four, except Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 through 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. However, in the case of Steps 8 through 10, they’re presented every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available for federal government employees in specific positions, such as professional and administrative roles that allow you to advance through the ranks to the higher grades to be considered for the position you are applying for. In general, if this type of ladder is offered in the position you’re applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that ascend at intervals of grade levels (for instance, GS-5 to 7 , and finally 9) this means that, if you’re promoted, you will go to a higher grade. Your yearly performance evaluation will determine whether or not you qualify for the promotion. Pay increase of at minimum several thousand dollars are typically connected with the move up one or more GS grades in the Federal Government.
