Grade Levels

GS-1 to GS-15 is the grade-level category used within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and the qualifications required to be a candidate for a particular position. The General Schedule is split into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. In the case of an occupation the grade level that is assigned indicates the starting compensation, with higher grades indicating greater income.

In general, entry-level jobs for where a high school diploma or a bachelor’s or master’s degree are required will be listed as being GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade levels for positions requiring a master’s degree, additional years of experience beyond entry-level or management as well as supervisory work are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for positions like psychologists, doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level, and they are classed as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay for a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the region. As of the date at the time of writing, approximately 35 metropolitan regions get a specific locality-specific pay, which is higher than the typical adjustment received by the rest in the United States.

The average adjustment rate, for example of 14.16 percent in the year 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta receives a locality wage that is 19.29 percent, and the residents of Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, or. Multiply the percentage of locality pay times the GS base rate, and then add that number to the base rate to calculate your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten separate stages in each of the general Schedule classes that each offer a somewhat better wage than the step before it. For instance, the majority of federal departments and agencies provide beginning pay at Step One in your grade. In addition you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe your previous experience warrants a greater income level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study is completed, the team member becomes qualified for a raise equivalent to the next highest level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. The evaluation of performance occurs every annually for the steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are performed every two years. And when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they are conducted each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A career ladder is available for federal government employees in specific positions like administrative and professional positions that permit you to advance through the ranks to higher grade levels to be considered for the position you are applying for. If this type of ladder option is available for the position you are applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that rise at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 to 7 before moving to 9) this means that, if you’re promoted, you’ll be up two levels. Your yearly performance evaluation will determine if you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increase of at minimum some thousand dollars are frequently associated with moving to higher GS grades within Federal government.
