OPM 2022 Pay Scale GS

OPM 2022 Pay Scale GSGS Pay Scale 2022 – The General Schedule pay scale is used to determine the salary of the majority of employees of the government. To set this pay scale in the first place, The United States Office of Personnel Management examines salary surveys and pay information obtained from United States Bureau of Labor Statistics of non-government workers that perform similar work as federal employees. Knowing exactly how General Schedule payscale works will aid you in negotiating a beginning salary at your initial interview, as well as paying more as you advance throughout your career.

Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the grade-level classification employed in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and skills required for a given job. The General Schedule is divided into 15 distinct grade level classifications. In the event of an occupation the grade level represents the beginning salary, with higher grade levels representing more significant income.

In general, entry-level jobs for that a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree is required can be classified under GS-1 to GS-7 grade levels. Grade-level designations for positions that require a Master’s degree, further years of experience that go beyond entry-level or management as well as supervisory work are assigned to classes GS-8 and GS-12. Advanced and professional degrees are required for jobs like psychologists and doctors and those requiring high-level specialists and are classified as G2-13 and GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of an employee that is on the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the region. At the time of writing, around 35 metropolitan regions receive special locality salary, which is higher than the typical adjustment received by the rest of the United States.

The typical adjustment rate, for example of 14.16 percent in 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta is paid a locality rate that is 19.29 percent, while those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay with the GS basis rate and then add the number by the rate of base to determine your annual salary.

GS Steps

There are ten separate steps in the general Schedule classes that each offer an averagely higher salary that the preceding step. For example, most federal departments and agencies provide beginning pay at Step One in your grade. However you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe your previous experiences warrant a higher level.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly following each performance review. After each study an employee is qualified for a raise equal to the next amount, at the choice of the manager or supervisor. Evaluations of performance are held each one year in Steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. And in the case of Steps 8 to 10, they’re presented each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A career ladder is available in certain federal government positions for professional and administrative roles that permit individuals to climb the ranks to the higher grades in your job. If this type of ladder job is available for the job you are applying for it will be mentioned in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Certain occupations have ladders that are able to be climbed at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9) this means that if promoted, you’ll go to a higher grade. Your annual performance assessment will determine whether or not you qualify for this promotion. Pay increments of several thousand dollars are typically associated with moving upwards one or more GS grades within Federal government.
