Grade Levels

GS-1 through GS-15 is the classification of grade used to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and qualifications necessary for a given position. It is divided into 15 distinct grade level classifications. In the event of work, the grade level assigned represents the beginning salary, with higher grades indicating greater income.

The majority of entry-level positions where a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree might be required is classified as GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. Grade-level designations for positions that require a Master’s degree, more years of experience above entry-level or management and supervisory experiences are classified into GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions such as psychologists and doctors and those requiring high-level specialists and are classed as G2-13 through GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay of a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the region. At the time of writing, around 35 metropolitan areas receive a special locality salary, which is more than the usual allowances received by the remainder part of the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, for instance is 14.16 percent in 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta receives a locality wage which is 19.29 percent, and those working in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay by the GS Base Rate, and then add that number by the rate of base to calculate the total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten different stages within each of the General Schedule classes, each of which offers an essentially higher wage than the step before it. For example, most federal agencies and departments give beginning pay starting at the Step One in your grade. In addition you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you think your prior experience justifies a higher income amount.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly, and after each study, the team member becomes eligible for a raise equal to the next level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Performance evaluations are conducted every calendar year, for steps One through Four and Step Five, with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. And with regard to Steps 8 through 10, they’re presented every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder to career is offered in certain federal government positions, such as administrative and professional positions and allows you to advance through the ranks to the higher grades for your position. In general, if this type of career ladder option is available for the job you are applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for example, from GS-5 to 7 , and finally 9) That means that if you get promoted, you’ll move up two levels. Your annual performance evaluation will determine if you qualify for this promotion. Pay increases of at least several thousand dollars are typically linked to promotions to higher GS grades within the federal government.
