Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level category that is used in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility and qualifications necessary for the position. In the General Schedule, there are broken down into 15 separate grade level classifications. In the case of work, the grade level assigned corresponds to the salary at the start, with higher grades indicating higher amounts of income.

Typically, entry-level positions for those who have a high-school diploma or bachelor’s degree might be required can be classified under GS-1 to GS-7 grade levels. Grade-level designations for positions which require a master’s or additional years of experience beyond the entry-level level, or management or supervisory experience are classified into classes GS-8 and GS-12. Advanced and professional degrees are required for positions such as doctors and psychologists and for those that require specialists of high-level which are classified as G2-13 to GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of a position within the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the region. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan areas receive a specific locality-specific pay, which is more than the usual adjustments received by the rest parts of United States.

The average adjustment rate, as an example is 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta gets a locality payment of 19.29 percent, and those who work in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the locality pay percentage by the GS basis rate then add that number on top of the base wage to calculate your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten steps in the General Schedule classes and each one offers a somewhat better wage over the previous step. In the case of federal employees, most agencies and departments offer beginning salary at the Step One within your grade. Additionally you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you think your prior experience justifies a higher income level.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly, and after each study each team member is eligible for a pay increase equal to the next level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Evaluations of performance are held every one year in Steps One through Four however, it is not the case for Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. And in the case of Steps 8 to 10, they’re shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available in federal government jobs including administrative and professional roles that allow individuals to climb the ranks to higher levels for your position. If this type of career ladder option is available for the post you are applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice for federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that are able to be climbed at grade-level intervals (for instance, GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9) this means that if promoted, you’ll move to a higher grade. The annual performance review will determine whether or not you qualify for this promotion. Pay increases of at least several thousand dollars are typically connected with the move up one or more GS grades in The federal government.
