Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the grade-level classification that is used to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and requirements for the job. It is split into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. In the event of an employment position the grade level that is assigned is the initial compensation with higher grade levels representing more significant income.

Generally, entry-level positions for which a high school diploma or a bachelor’s or master’s degree are required is classified as GS-1 to GS-7 grade levels. The grade level designations for jobs that require a master’s degree more years of experience above the entry-level level, or management as well as supervisory work are classified into classes GS-8 and GS-12. Professional and advanced degrees are required for positions like psychologists, doctors as well as those that require high-level specialists, and they are classified as G2-13 through GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of a position within the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the region. At the time when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan regions get a specific locality pay that is higher than the typical allowances received by the remainder parts of United States.

The typical adjustment rate, for instance of 14.16 percent in 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta is paid a locality rate which is 19.29 percent, and those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the locality pay percentage with the GS Base Rate, and then add the number on top of the base wage to arrive at the total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten stages in each of the General Schedule classes that each offer some sort of higher pay that the preceding step. For example, most federal agencies and departments give beginning pay starting at Step One at your grade. At the same time you may be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe your previous experience warrants a greater income amount.

The performance reviews are carried out regularly and, after each evaluation each team member is qualified for a raise equivalent to the next amount, at the choice of the manager or supervisor. The evaluation of performance occurs every annually for the steps One through Four and Step Five, with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are performed every two years. And in the case of Steps 8 to 10, they’re presented every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available for federal government employees in specific positions including administrative and professional roles that allow you to advance through the ranks to the higher grades in your job. In general, if this kind of career ladder is offered for the position you are applying for it will be listed in the federal job vacancy notice.

Certain occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 to 7 , and finally 9) This means that if you get promoted, you’ll go up two grade levels. Your annual performance evaluation will determine if you qualify for this promotion. Pay increases of at least thousands of dollars are usually related to moving up one or more GS grade levels in Federal government.
