Grade Levels

GS-1 through GS-15 is the classification of grade used in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility and skills required for a given position. In the General Schedule, there are broken down into 15 separate grade level classifications. When it comes to an occupation, the grade level assigned represents the beginning salary, and higher grade levels imply greater income.

Typically, entry-level positions for where a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree might be required is classified as GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade level designations for positions that require a Master’s degree, additional years of work experience over entry-level or management or supervisory experience are assigned to the GS-8 to GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced qualifications are required for positions such as psychologists and doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level as well as being classed as G2-13 through grades GS-15.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of a job in the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the area. As of the date at the time of writing, approximately 35 metropolitan areas receive a specific locality-specific pay, which is greater than the standard adjustments received by the rest part of the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, in this case, was around 14.16 percent in 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta is paid a locality rate that is 19.29 percent, and those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay multiplied by your GS base salary, then add that number on top of the base wage to determine your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten distinct stages in each of the general Schedule classes, each of which offers a somewhat better wage over the previous step. For instance, many federal agencies and departments offer beginning pay starting at Step One within your grade. Additionally you might be in a position to negotiate “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experiences justify a higher level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis following each performance review. After each study each team member is eligible for a pay increase equivalent to the next level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Performance evaluations are conducted each calendar year, for steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7 the evaluations are carried out every two years. Likewise, with regard to Steps 8 to 10, they are shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available in particular federal government employment for administrative and professional positions that permit you to rise through the ranks to higher grade levels to be considered for the position you are applying for. Generally speaking, if this kind of career ladder option is available for the position you are applying for, it will be stated in the federal job vacancy notice.

Certain occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for example, from GS-5 to 7 before moving to 9) This means that if you are promoted, you’ll be up two grade levels. Your annual performance evaluation will determine if you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increments of at least several thousand dollars are often linked to promotions to higher GS grades within Federal government.
