Grade Levels

GS-1 through GS-15 is the category of grade used within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and the qualifications required to be a candidate for a particular job. The General Schedule can be split into 15 distinct grade level classifications. In the case of an employment position, the grade level assigned represents the beginning salary, with higher grades indicating greater income.

Typically, entry-level positions for where a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree is required is classified as GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. The grade level designations for jobs that require a master’s degree more years of experience above the entry-level level, or management or supervisory experience are classified into GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for positions such as doctors and psychologists as well as those that require high-level specialists as well as being classed as G2-13 through the GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is in addition to the base pay for a job on the General Schedule scale to account for the cost of living in the area. At the time of writing, around 35 metropolitan areas receive a specific locality pay that is greater than the normal allowances received by the remainder in the United States.

The standard adjustment rate, for example, was around 14.16 percent in the year 2011. Still, employment in Atlanta is paid a locality rate in the amount of 19.29 percent, while those working in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the percentage of locality pay by the GS basis rate and then add that number by the rate of base to calculate your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten separate steps in the general Schedule classes, each of which offers an essentially higher wage than the one preceding it. For instance, the majority of federal departments and agencies offer starting wages at the beginning of the Step One at your grade. At the same time, you may be able to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe your previous experience justifies a higher income amount.

The performance reviews are carried out regularly and, after each evaluation an employee is eligible for an increase in pay equal to the next amount, at the choice of the supervisor or manager. Performance evaluations are conducted each annually for the steps One through Four and Step Five, with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. However, with regard to Steps 8 through 10, they’re presented each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder to career is offered in federal government jobs like professional and administrative roles that allow individuals to climb the levels to be promoted to higher grade levels in your job. If this kind of career ladder job is available for the position you are applying for it will be mentioned in the federal job vacancy notice.

Certain professions have ladders which climb at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 , then 7, and finally 9), which means that if you are promoted, you’ll move up two levels. Your annual performance evaluation will determine whether or not you qualify for this promotion. Pay increments of some thousand dollars are frequently associated with moving to higher GS grade levels in the Federal Government.
