Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the classification of grade employed in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and qualifications necessary for a specific position. In the General Schedule, there are split into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. In the event of an occupation, the grade level assigned is the initial compensation with higher grade levels representing more significant income.

Typically, entry-level positions for where a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree is required will be listed as being GS-1 through GS-7 grade levels. Grade-level designations for positions that require a master’s degree additional years of work experience over the entry-level levels, or managerial and supervisory experiences are classified into the GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced qualifications are required for positions like psychologists and doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level and are classified as G2-13 to grades GS-15.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of a job that is on the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the region. At the time when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan areas receive a specific locality-specific pay, which is higher than the typical adjustments that are offered to the rest of the United States.

The normal adjustment rate, for instance of 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta gets a locality payment that is 19.29 percent, and those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, respectively. Multiply the locality pay percentage multiplied by your GS Base Rate, then add the number on top of the base wage to arrive at your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten distinct steps in the General Schedule classes and each one offers some sort of higher pay over the previous step. For instance, the majority of federal agencies and departments offer beginning wages at the beginning of the Step One in your grade. In addition you might be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe your previous experiences warrant a higher level.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly after each review. Following each one each team member is eligible for a raise equivalent to the next level, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. The evaluation of performance occurs every one year in Steps One through Four and Step Five, with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. In the case of Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. And when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they are shown every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available for federal government employees in specific positions like professional and administrative roles, which allows individuals to climb the ranks to the higher grades in your job. In general, if this kind of career ladder job is available for the job you are applying for it will be listed in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Some jobs have ladders that ascend at intervals of grade levels (for example, from GS-5 to 7 and then 9) That means that if promoted, you’ll be to a higher grade. The annual performance review will determine if you qualify for this promotion. Pay increase of at minimum several thousand dollars are typically linked to promotions up one or more GS grade levels in Federal government.
