Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the category of grade that is used within the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and requirements for a given position. The General Schedule is split into 15 separate grade level classifications. In the event of an employment position, the grade level assigned is the initial compensation with higher grades indicating the highest amount of income.

Typically, entry-level positions for that a high school diploma or a bachelor’s degree is required are classified as GS-1 through the GS-7 grades. Grade-level designations for positions which require a master’s or further years of experience that go beyond entry-level, or management as well as supervisory work are classified into classes GS-8 and GS-12. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions such as psychologists and doctors and positions that require specialist qualifications at the highest level, and they are classified as G2-13 through G2-15 grades.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base wage of a job in the General Schedule scale to account for living expenses within the area. As of the date when this article was written, roughly 35 metropolitan regions get a specific locality-specific pay, which is greater than the normal adjustments that are offered to the rest parts of United States.

The standard adjustment rate, as an example, was around 14.16 percent in 2011. But, workers in Atlanta receives a locality wage which is 19.29 percent, and the residents of Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, and 27.16. Multiply the locality pay percentage with the GS basis rate and then add that number in addition to your base salary to calculate your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten separate steps in the General Schedule classes that each offer a somewhat better wage that the preceding step. For instance, many federal departments and agencies provide beginning wages at the beginning of Step One at your grade. Additionally, you may be in a position to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experiences justify a higher amount.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly after each review. Following each one is completed, the team member becomes eligible for a pay increase equivalent to the next grade, at the discretion of the supervisor or manager. Evaluations of performance are held every calendar year, for steps One through Four and Step Five, with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 through 7, the evaluations take place every two years. And for Steps 8 to 10, they are conducted each year for three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available for federal government employees in specific positions, such as administrative and professional positions and allows one to move up the levels to be promoted to higher grade levels for your position. If this type of ladder job is available for the position you are applying for it will be listed in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Certain occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for instance, from GS-5 to 7 before moving to 9) This means that if you are promoted, you’ll move to a higher grade. Your annual performance evaluation will determine whether or not you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increases of at least several thousand dollars are often related to moving up to one or more GS grade levels in the federal government.
