Grade Levels

GS-1 up to GS-15 is the grade-level category used in the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the level of difficulty, responsibility and requirements for a specific position. It is broken down into fifteen distinct grade level classifications. In the event of a job the grade level is the initial compensation with higher grades representing higher amounts of income.

In general, entry-level jobs for where a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree is required is classified as GS-1 to the GS-7 grades. Grade levels for positions that require a Master’s degree, additional years of work experience over the entry-level level, or management or supervision experience, are assigned to GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Advanced and professional qualifications are required for positions like psychologists and doctors and for those that require specialists of high-level, and they are classified as G2-13 through GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is included in the base pay of a position in the General Schedule scale to account for living costs in the area. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan areas receive a special locality salary, which is more than the usual adjustments received by the rest in the United States.

The average adjustment rate, for instance is 14.16 percent in the year 2011. But, workers in Atlanta gets a locality payment that is 19.29 percent, and those in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, or. Multiply the percentage of locality pay by the GS basis rate and then add that number by the rate of base to determine your total annual wage.

GS Steps

There are ten separate steps in the General Schedule classes that each offer an averagely higher salary that the preceding step. In the case of federal employees, most agencies and departments offer beginning pay starting at Step One within your grade. At the same time you may be eligible to negotiate “up” the Steps if you feel that your previous work experience warrants a greater income level.

Performance reviews are conducted regularly, and after each study an employee is qualified for a raise equivalent to the next highest grade, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. Performance evaluations are conducted every annually for the steps One through Four, except Step Five, which occurs every two years. When it comes to Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are conducted every two years. Likewise, with regard to Steps 8 through 10, they’re shown each three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

Career ladders are available in certain federal government positions like administrative and professional roles, which allows you to advance through the levels to be promoted to higher grade levels in your job. Generally speaking, if this kind of career ladder job is available for the job you are applying for the opportunity will be noted in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Some occupations have ladders that ascend at intervals of grade levels (for instance, GS-5 to 7 and then 9) this means that, if you’re promoted, you’ll be up two levels. Your yearly performance evaluation will determine whether or not you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increments of several thousand dollars are often related to moving upwards one or more GS grades in Federal government.
