Grade Levels

GS-1 and GS-15 is the category of grade used to determine the General Schedule, loosely characterized by the difficulty, responsibility, and requirements for the position. The General Schedule is broken down into 15 separate grade level classifications. For an occupation the grade level that is assigned indicates the starting compensation, with higher grades representing more significant income.

Generally, entry-level positions for that a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree may be necessary is classified as GS-1 through GS-7 grade levels. Grade levels for positions requiring a master’s degree, more years of experience above entry-level, or management and supervisory experiences are assigned to GS-8 through GS-12 categories. Professional and advanced degrees are required for certain positions such as psychologists and doctors and for those that require specialists of high-level, and they are classed as G2-13 through GS-15 grade levels.

Locality Pay

Locality pay is added to the base salary of a position that is on the General Schedule scale to account for the living expenses in the region. At the time of this writing, about 35 metropolitan areas receive a special locality salary, which is higher than the typical allowances received by the remainder parts of United States.

The normal adjustment rate, in this case is 14.16 percent in the year 2011. However, employees in Atlanta gets a locality payment in the amount of 19.29 percent, and those who work in Los Angeles receive a locality pay of 27.16 percent, or. Multiply the percentage of locality pay times the GS base rate, and then add the number on top of the base wage to determine your total annual earnings.

GS Steps

There are ten steps in the general Schedule classes and each one offers a somewhat better wage over the previous step. For instance, many federal agencies and departments give beginning pay at Step One in your grade. Additionally, you may be in a position to negotiate “up” the Steps if you believe that your previous experience justifies a higher income level.

Review of performance is conducted on a regular basis and, after each evaluation is completed, the team member becomes eligible for a raise equal to the next level, at the discretion of the manager or supervisor. The evaluation of performance occurs each annually for the steps One through Four with the exception of Step Five, which occurs every two years. For Steps 5 to 7, evaluations are performed every two years. And when it comes to Steps 8 through 10, they are conducted every three years.

Grade-Level Promotions

A ladder for career advancement is available in certain federal government positions including professional and administrative roles, which allows individuals to climb the levels to be promoted to higher grade levels in your job. Generally speaking, if this type of career ladder job is available in the position you’re applying for it will be mentioned in the notice of federal job vacancies.

Some occupations have ladders that climb at grade-level intervals (for example, from GS-5 to 7 and then 9) this means that if you are promoted, you will go up two levels. The annual performance review will determine whether or not you are eligible for this promotion. Pay increases of at least several thousand dollars are typically associated with moving up to one or more GS grades within Federal government.
